“Wine Paris,” held from February 9 to 11, 2026, is regarded as one of the leading international trade fairs in the global wine industry, bringing together more than 6,000 exhibitors from over 60 countries and tens of thousands of professional visitors. For Changyu, this year’s event became the stage for a special moment: Sun Jian, CEO of the Changyu Group based in Yantai (Shandong, China), presented French President Emmanuel Macron with a 6-liter bottle of L12 – LONGYU ESTATE.

This large-format bottle placed a wine at center stage that has developed into a flagship of Chinese premium production in recent years. That this moment took place in Paris—at the heart of one of the world’s most traditional wine nations—gave it additional resonance.

During the conversation between Macron and Sun Jian, it became clear that the qualitative development of Chinese wines is being closely observed in France. Ningxia, the high plateau along the Yellow River, has evolved within just two decades from an ambitious origin into an internationally award-winning top wine region. Hot, dry summers, cool nights, and extreme temperature differences produce concentrated, structured wines. In winter, when temperatures can drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius, the vines must be buried by hand—an extremely labor-intensive process that demands uncompromising dedication to quality.

130,000 Bottles – China’s Best-Selling Icon Wine

With approximately 130,000 bottles produced and sold annually, L12 is China’s best-selling icon wine. This figure is exceptional in the premium segment and comparable to production volumes of renowned Bordeaux châteaux. L12 thus combines prestige and market strength—a rare combination on the international stage.

The cuvée consists of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Marselan. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the powerful backbone, providing structure and elegance, while Marselan contributes spice and aromatic depth.

Particularly distinctive are the exceptionally small Cabernet Sauvignon berries from Ningxia, among the smallest in the world. While the international average berry weight is around 1.6 grams, those grown here fall significantly below that. The higher skin-to-juice ratio results in intense color density, high extract concentration, and a pronounced yet precise tannin structure.

In the glass, L12 appears deep and dark, with notes of cassis, black cherry, and blackberry, accompanied by subtle graphite and toasted aromas from aging in French oak. The structure is dense yet clearly defined, with considerable aging potential. The stylistic ideal of wines from Changyu Chateau in Ningxia—marked by refined, regionally characteristic Cabernet fruit and notable elegance—is exemplified here.

A Visible Sign of Ningxia’s Ambition

The presentation of the 6-liter bottle at Wine Paris drew attention to a wine that has grown far beyond its domestic market. Ningxia is increasingly perceived as a premium origin with a clearly defined style and substantial production volume. From May onward, L12 will also be introduced to the European market—as the “big brother” of the already established icon wine “Purple Air Comes from the East” from Chateau Changyu Moser XV.
